Colleague from Iglu Šport, Krešo, invited me to come along with his hiking club “Kapela” to Zavižan on Northern Velebit. I never went to an organized hiking trip before, heck, the last time I did an organized bus tour was in high school some 15 years ago, so why not.

Most of the group left Oltari during the night, as this was their traditional annual night winter ascend to Zavižan. Krešo, Duda (also colleague form Iglu) and I decided to take it easy and stay at Oltari overnight. The next morning well beaten path was in front of us allowing us to walk up the mountain with hands in our pockets. We reached famous Zavižan after a few hours of really enjoyable hike. The place was well heated up and the beans stew for the whole group had already been cooking on fire, so we took a quick sip of tea and headed for the surrounding peaks.

The night was a classic, with food, drinks and stories…

We woke up to a brilliant sunshine and great views all across the Adriatic sea and Italy protruding from the horizon. Unfortunately it was time to descent to Klada where we met Ante, who is now retired and doesn’t work on Zavižan anymore. Ante treated us with his travarica and waved us goodbye.  I should have caled in sick and stayed another day, I’m sure Robert would understand 🙂
