Late winter on Velebit
Winter, 2026.
February and March finally brought some stable days on Velebit. After a long stretch of bad weather, it felt good to be back up there, moving again.
I spent most of the time between Northern Velebit and Paklenica. Same areas I keep returning to, but it never really repeats. Snow was usually hard, settled, and thin in places. Typical spring conditions, which I actually prefer. It allows for a more casual, laid back approach, not worrying too much and moving easier and faster.
Velebit is my favorite place, especially during snow time. The silence up there is something else. Real quiet. Most days without seeing anyone, just occasional animal track. What always gets me is the view towards the sea. Skis on snow and the Adriatic in the distance. Hard to explain, but it keeps pulling me back.
There is less snow every year, that part is obvious. Still, being up there, even like this, is enough.
